Why Would God Do That

Sometimes, we experience things in life that cause us to wonder, "why would God do that?" Sometimes people approach us with that same questions. It can seem like God does things that are contrary to His character, or that don't agree with what we understand to be true of Him. In Acts 5, the story of Ananias and Sapphira is one that seems to contradict the grace and mercy that are such an important part of the new covenant. In this message, we look at what happens when we don't understand God's actions.

Powerless

In Acts 4, the apostles began to suffer resistance and even persecution. In a worldly sense, they probably felt powerless - there was little that they could do to change their circumstances. But the truth is that because of God, they were far from powerless - and this story shows us that even when we feel powerless, we actually aren't. We have some pretty important choices and opportunities that are available to us - that no one and no situation can rob us of.

This is a description of a Church that was truly on fire for Jesus. It wasn't a perfect church; but it was the kind of church that we can become, if our values and priorities are the same as theirs were.

After Peter preached his world-changing sermon on the Day of Pentecost, the people who heard it wanted to respond. When they asked Peter what they should do, he told them to repent and to be baptized - two very important responses that are valid but often neglected today when we proclaim the Good News. In this message, Pastor Don outlines why both repentance and baptism are important, and how neither one contradicts the message of salvation by grace alone.

Part 2 of Pastor Don's sermon series on Acts. This week, we look at Acts 1:6-9, where the disciples want Jesus to restore the kingdom to Israel - a plea for national revival. But Jesus had bigger plans - Kingdom plans for the world. There are some important lessons in this for us today as we consider the impact of the Supreme Court's decision on gay marriage. What should our response be as followers of Jesus? How does this affect us as a church, as a part of the C&MA, and as individual followers of Jesus? What does the Bible teach about homosexuality, and how do we balance grace and truth?
